Mr. Abul Ahsan was born in December, 1936. He completed his graduation with Honors in Economics in 1958 and Masters in 1959 from the University of Dhaka in 1959. He joined the erstwhile Pakistan Foreign Service in 1961 securing the first position in the combined civil and foreign service examination. He was sent to the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy in Boston, USA, from where he obtained a Masters degree in 1962. During his career as a professional diplomat Mr. Ahsan held various diplomatic assignments in Ottawa, Beirut, New Delhi and London from 1962-76. He was Bangladesh Ambassador to Poland (Jan 78 - Apr 79), Deputy Permanent Representative (Ambassador) to the UN in New York (Apr 79 - May 80), Ambassador Italy (May 80 - Sep 82) and High Commissioner to Pakistan. He was the first Secretary General of SAARC from 1985-1989. He became Foreign Secretary in November 1989 and continued in this position till retirement in September 1991.
