Born in 1928, Mr. Shah. A. M. S. Kibria received his Bachelors and Masters in Economics from the University of Dhaka before joining the Pakistan Foreign Service in 1953. Subsequently he held a number of posts in the Pakistan Foreign Ministry and Missions abroad. He also received graduation degree from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy in Boston, U.S.A. After independence, Mr Kibria joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as Director-General of the Political Affairs Department. From 1973-76, he was Bangladesh High Commissioner to Australia and from 1976-78 Bangladesh Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva. In 1978, Mr. Kibria returned to the headquarters as Foreign Secretary, a position he held till 1981. As foreign secretary, he served concurrently as the elected Chairman of the Group of 77 Preparatory Committee for UNCTAD V in 1979. He was the Executive Secretary of the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) from 1981-89. Mr. S.A.M.S. Kibria was the Finance Minister of the country from 1996-2001.
