OIC Secretary General Dr. Yousef bin Ahmad Al-Othaimeen is on the second day of his visit programmes in Bangladesh. On Thursday he 3 August he paid courtesy calls on the President Md. Abdul Hamid, on the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and held a meeting with the Foreign Minister A H Mahmood Ali, MP. He also attended a dinner hosted by Foreign Minister Ali in his honour in the evening of Thursday.
Today on Friday August 4 Secretary General Othaimeen visited Kutupalang Camp and surrounding makeshifts in Cox’s Bazar and saw first hand the plight of the Rakhine Muslims who were compelled to cross over the border for life and to take shelter in Bangladesh in the latest round of atrocities done on them and displacement caused since October last year. He visited them; talked to them; heard their tales of sufferings; expressed OIC support and sympathy for them; expressed full OIC solidarity with the Rakhine Muslims; and assured them of doing OIC’s and his part for them. A F M Gousal Azam Sarker, Director General (International Organisations) and other officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Deputy Commissioner of Cox’s Bazar Md. Ali Hossain accompanied the Secretary General’s delegation to Kutupalang.
Secretary General Othaimeen also exchanged views with the local administration and representatives of International Humanitarian Organizations working there and coordinating humanitarian assistance for the Rohingyas. He enquired of their life in the shelters and services they are receiving. He reiterated his thanks to the Government of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for sheltering them in their crisis and patiently providing them necessary humanitarian assistance and services.
Returning to Dhaka in the afternoon, Secretary General Othaimeen visited Bangladesh Islamic Foundation and inaugurated a Halal Laboratory there as the chief guest in the evening. The ceremony was followed by exchange of views with Islamic scholars and Ulema and a dinner hosted in his honour. Minister of Religious Affairs Principal Matior Rahman chaired the event.
During the exchange of views, Secretary General Othaimeen made an announcement of a donation of $100,000 as a symbolic humanitarian gesture.
Secretary General Othaimeen is wrapping up his visit and leaving Dhaka for Jeddah on Saturday 5 August in the morning.
