A very good morning to you all!

It’s indeed a pleasure for me to be here today at this inaugural session. I thank both ICRC delegation in Bangladesh and Diplomatic Correspondents Association, Bangladesh (DCAB) for organizing such an event on a topical theme, ‘Reporting Humanitarian Crises and Emergencies’.

DG, OPCW calls on Foreign Minister

“Bangladesh, as a signatory to the Chemical Weapons Convention, would continue to promote peaceful use of chemicals and create a world free of chemical weapons,” said the Foreign Minister Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali, MP during a meeting with Ahmet Üzümcü, Director General of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) at the State Guest House Padma yesterday.

Bangladesh finds these developments in Rakhine State, bordering Bangladesh disturbing and Bangladesh unequivocally condemns the attacks on Myanmar forces. We are concerned at the loss of innocent lives in these clashes. We underscore the need for arresting perpetrators and for due judicial process to bring them to justice.

1. At the invitation of His Excellency Mr. Md. Abdul Hamid, President of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, His Excellency Mr. Xi Jinping, President of the People’s Republic of China, paid a state visit to the People’s Republic of Bangladesh on 14-15 October 2016. This visit has ushered the traditional friendship between China and Bangladesh into a new era and bears significant historical importance to the bilateral relationship.

At the invitation of the Prime Minister of India, the Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina will visit Goa, India to attend the BRICS- BIMSTEC Outreach Summit to be held on 16 October 2016. The theme of the Summit is “A partnership in Opportunities”. The Outreach Summit is being organized at the sideline of BRICS Summit to be convened on 15-16 October 2016. Heads of States /Heads of Governments of other BIMSTEC member states are also expected to attend the Outreach Summit on 16th October.
