Dhaka, 21 March 2018: Ministry of Foreign Affairs jointly with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) organized a 02-day National Workshop on “Countering the Financing of Terrorism and the proliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction” in Dhaka on 21-22 March 2018. Mr. Md. Shahidul Haque, Foreign Secretary inaugurated the workshop today at the UNCLOS Conference Room of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. A total of 30 participants from National Board of Revenue, Bangladesh Police, Armed Forces Division, Bangladesh National Authority for Chemical Weapons Convention, Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit, Ministry of Home Affairs and Ministry of Foreign Affairs are taking part in the workshop.

The workshop focuses on capacity building of the Government officials in addressing the threats and flow of terrorist-financing and proliferation of weapons of mass destructions pursuant to relevant United Nations Security Council Resolutions (UNSCRs). The UN Security Council has the mandate to designate individuals and entities as terrorists and impose obligation to the member states to freeze assets and funds and restrict travel of those designated as terrorists for preventing flow of terror financing. The Workshop is customized for the Officials who are responsible for dealing with this task at the immigration and border entry points as well as inside the country. The Workshop will provide a thorough orientation on the process and guidelines for effective implementation of these UN restrictions/sanctions.

Bangladesh has made bold strides in strengthening its legal and regulatory regimes on combating terrorism and financing of terrorism. In addition to its efforts domestically, Bangladesh is working closely with other countries, regional organizations and the United Nations to fight this menace. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs formed a National Committee on Implementation of UN Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) relating to terrorism and financing of terrorism. One of the responsibilities of the committee is to arrange workshops and training sessions for different actors to build capacity and raise awareness for fulfilling their obligations under the concerned terrorist financial sanctions by the UN Security Council.
